Who am I?

Dr. Mihir N. Shah (MDS, PhD) is one of the leading Periodontist (Specialist in Gum Diseases) of Gujarat State and has extensive clinical experience since 1990. He is an eminent and well known private practitioner with great inflow of patients from lengths and breadths of Gujarat and various neighboring states like Rajasthan & MP as well as international locations like USA and UK. He has an evening specialty periodontal practice in posh area at CG road since 1995 where he works from basic to complex procedures starting from periodontal flap surgery, bone grafting to esthetic procedures, guided tissue regeneration, implants and laser procedures.

Dr. Mihir, is also an eminent Anti-tobacco activist and a Tobacco Control Consultant to W.H.O (HQ –Switzerland). He has authored a book "Helping your patients remain Tobacco Free".

Currently, he is Dean at Ahmedabad Dental College & Hospital and heading the Department of Periodontics & Oral Implantology with intake of 5 PG and 100 UG students every year. He is also a PhD guide affiliated to Gujarat University enrolling 3 PhD students every year.

WHAT IS PERIODONTAL DISEASE?

Periodontal (gum) disease, including gingivitis and periodontitis, are serious inflammatory disorders that, left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. The word periodontal literally means "around the tooth." Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth. Periodontal disease can affect one tooth or many teeth. It begins when the bacteria in plaque (the sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on your teeth) causes the gums to become inflamed.

Q-1. Which types of dental diseases are of common occurrence?

A-1.
Generally two types of diseases are seen in teeth
i) Tooth decay and
ii) Pyorrhea.
 Patient experiences pain in tooth decay therefore he immediately visits the dentist for treatment whereas in pyorrhoea no pain is experienced although it leads to gradual bone loss and loosening of the teeth. Due to absence of pain in pyorrhea, there is lack of awareness about this disease in the patients.

Q-2. What is pyorrhoea? Which type of disease or condition is it?

A-2.
Pyorrhoea is a type of disease that causes infection of gums that surround and hold the teeth. This infection spreads into the underlying bone, consequently weakening the bone as well as the tooth.
In simple words, this disease can be compared with termites' attack where it weakens the wood by gradually destructing it, similarly in pyorrhoea the bacteria spreads the infection from gums to the underlying bone and gradually weakens the tooth support.
